Abby answers calls in English by default.
Spanish-language support is available for calls handled by AI and human receptionists. AI multilingual mode and human receptionist language routing are configured separately.
AI Multilingual Support
AI answering can operate in:
English-only mode
Multilingual mode
When multilingual mode is enabled, AI can recognize and respond to Spanish-speaking callers while continuing to follow your existing call-handling setup.
Enabling multilingual mode does not change your:
Call types
Caller questions
Transfer settings
Message handling
Scheduling actions
Other call-handling instructions
Call summaries and activity information in the Abby portal are generated in English.
How AI Detects a Caller's Language
At the beginning of a call, AI analyzes the caller's responses to determine which language is being used.
When another supported language is detected, AI identifies the language and continues in the caller's language.
If another language is not detected during the first three responses, the conversation continues in English.
Language detection occurs throughout the call. If a caller begins in English and switches languages later, AI may not automatically detect the change.
Languages AI May Detect
Abby primarily supports and promotes calls in English and Spanish.
AI may also detect and conduct conversations in additional languages, including:
Dutch
French
German
Hindi
Indonesian
Italian
Japanese
Norwegian
Portuguese
Russian
Turkish
Support and testing for languages other than English and Spanish may be limited.
Human Receptionist Spanish Support
Human receptionist answering includes both English-speaking and bilingual English-Spanish receptionists.
If a Spanish-speaking caller reaches an English-only receptionist, the call can be transferred to a bilingual receptionist as soon as one is available.
Spanish Phone Tree Routing
You may request a phone tree that lets callers select their preferred language before reaching a receptionist.
For example:
Press 1 for English
Press 2 for Spanish
One option can route callers directly to bilingual receptionists, while the other routes callers to the standard receptionist team.
This helps Spanish-speaking callers reach an appropriate receptionist from the beginning of the call.
