Phone Number Porting

Thinking about moving your phone number over to Abby? That process is called porting, and we’ve made it easy to understand and get started.

Updated yesterday

What Is Porting?

Porting is the process of transferring your phone number from one carrier to another—while keeping the number exactly the same.

Example:
If you're currently with T-Mobile and want to switch to Verizon without changing your number, that's porting.

You can do the same when moving your number over to Abby.

When Should I Consider Porting?

You may want to port your number if:

  • You experience lag during call transfers

  • Your number is currently hosted by another answering service

  • Call forwarding isn’t working reliably

  • Callers are reaching your carrier’s voicemail instead of Abby

This is especially common with services like Google Voice and RingCentral, but it can happen with other providers too.

Is There a Cost?

  • Porting a number into Abby: Free

  • Porting a number out of Abby:

    • If Abby provided the number, there’s a $100 port-out fee

    • If the number was originally yours, there’s no fee

📝 How to Port Your Number to Abby

To begin the porting process, you’ll need:

  1. A Letter of Authorization (LOA) – Template below⬇️

  2. A recent invoice or proof of purchase from your current phone provider

    • Both documents must be in PDF format

    • If you have multiple providers, submit a separate LOA for each one

Once you have those documents:

➡️ Chat us through your Abby portal and attach the documents:

How Long Does It Take?

Porting typically takes 2–4 weeks, depending on your current carrier.

Special Note for Ruby Clients:
Ruby will send you a pre-filled LOA and a screenshot of your account to help with the process. Just upload those via a tech ticket.

What If I’m Porting My Number Out of Abby?

No problem! Just:

  1. Request a blank LOA from the new carrier you're switching to and complete it.

  2. Submit the completed LOA to us through your Abby portal.

  3. We’ll provide the proof of ownership and return both documents to you, so you can share them with your new carrier.

🔒 SID Requests

If your new provider asks for a SID (Service Identifier), please note:
For security reasons, we do not provide SIDs. Instead, request an LOA from your new provider and follow the port-out process above.
